A place that deserves it's reputation as the cradle of traditional folk art in Kerala. It has been the bed to art forms like Theyyam. Manju Warrier was soaked in such culture and artistry from a very early age. At 4, she was learning Barathanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi.Theyyam other wise known as Kaliyattam or Thirayattam, is one of the most outstanding folk arts of Kerala. Just as the name Kaliyattam indicates, it is a sacred ritual dance performed to glorify the goddess Kaali. The term 'Theyyam' is supposed to be the corrupt form of the Malayalam word Daivam. meaning God.It earned the name Thirayattam as every thira or village performed this ritualistic art at the village temple known as kaavu.
Though she was initiated into classical dance form by Smt. Selinkumari at Nagarcoil, she trained under highly revered gurus like Smt. RLV Devi, Sri RLV Venu, Kalamandalam Sri Gopinath and N.V. Krishnan Master. Manju Warrier has been a disciple of Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam for long. Her current guru is Smt. Geetha Padmakumar. It's these varied influences coupled with ritualistic & disciplined training that helped her shape her as an exemplary dancer.
